Basic knowledge of Italian will enormously help you with studying other languages such as Spanish or Portuguese, which are both widely spoken in Latin America and Africa, but they're closely related to Italian and as such you should well be able to understand them once you've learnt Italian, even though you might not immediately feel comfortable trying to speak Spanish or Portuguese respectively.
